THE PROJECTS brings together experimental artists from comics, performance, music, animation, and other narrative arts for a free four-day festival of workshops, exhibitions, performances, collaborative projects, and intensive creative mayhem. Guest artists are given a short residency to make a site-specific piece or curate a collaborative workshop, and visitors get to work alongside some of the most outstanding artists in independent comics. The festival is oriented toward creative process and idiosyncratic expression, leaving behind the festival model of comics as commerce.

This is The Projects’ second year, and we can’t wait because last year’s festival was incredible! We were overwhelmed by the awesome work that was produced, the playful and incredibly talented people who participated, and, perhaps above all, the lasting connections made between people who worked and partied side-by-side for a long amazing weekend. This year promises to be just as marvelous with a packed program, a remodeled IPRC, and an earlier date so that we can bask in the summer sun! Plus, we have added a one-day bookfair at The Cleaners at the Ace Hotel, a dedicated night of Gridlords at the Hollywood Theater, a Free Spirit News playroom, and we have joined forces with Experimental Half Hour for two nights of trippy and spectacular performances!
The Projects is partnered with a new breed of European comics festivals that put creativity and connection at the forefront: Škver in Mali Lošinj, Croatia; Novo Doba in Belgrade, Serbia; Crack! in Rome. These festivals create an intimate and non-commercial environment for artists from different cities, countries, and generations to work together and share ideas. The emphasis is to make art, experiment, and play, and to go a little wild together. Since we first experienced these sister festivals in the Balkans a few years ago, we knew we needed to start something like this in Portland.

We’d also like to thank everyone who backed our Kickstarter fundraiser and all of our sponsors, without whom this festival would not be possible: Ace Hotel, Batdorf & Bronson Coffee Roasters, Brass Tacks Sandwiches, Floating World Comics, Gallery Homeland, IPRC, Ninkasi Brewing, Regional Arts & Culture Council, and SCRAP.
