Multi-disciplinary artist and Sitarist, GABBY LA LA (Les Claypool, Bernie Worrell, Snoop Dogg) is excited to announce the release of her first graphic memoir, NOT THE PATH OF TOTALITY, a visual journal in watercolor and ink. Inspired by her dad’s art practice and propelled by the Inktober Drawing Challenge, Gabby La La has fed her passion for daily art making by sharing her ongoing visual observations and commentary on life through over a year of Instagram posts.
NOT THE PATH OF TOTALITY is the culmination of this outpouring of creativity, literally painting the picture of a hard-working and dedicated mom, sister, wife, daughter, artist, and friend. In its pages, Gabby celebrates her day-to-day experiences, which fluctuate between the mundane and the extraordinary, due to the fact that she is married to writer and director, Boots Riley.
We learn about her distorted self-image, her serial weirdness, her creative obsessions, and her devotion to her friends and family, all through deeply honest reflections. We follow Gabby as she navigates her life, from driving her son in circles, making noodles for dinner (again), to painting those nipple highlights that really make her paintings pop. Gabby’s watercolor and ink drawings, doodles, and words reveal a colorful, humorous, unique person who wants you to know that, we are all just humans trying to do our best and no matter where our paths may take us, it’s ok if it’s NOT THE PATH OF TOTALITY.

Gabby La La was born in San Francisco, lives in Oakland, and wishes she had a third hand for doing all the dirty work. When she is not making art or making lunch, Gabby La La listens to books on tape while staring into space. When asked why anyone would want to read her diary, she said, “If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to be me, this is the book for you!”
“Since the dawn of recorded time, humans have sought answers to the central questions of existence and meaning, the most pressing of which is this: ‘What exactly goes on in the mind of Gabby La La?’ And now, with Not the Path of Totality, we have the answers. Humanity thanks you, Gabby La La.” — Dave Eggers, author of The Eyes & The Impossible
