Oct. 9th – SPECIAL: UNDERGROUND COMIX FROM CHINA

FLOATING WORLD COMICS PRESENTS:
SPECIAL: UNDERGROUND COMIX FROM CHINA

This October, John Jay from Weiden & Kennedy has organized a series of art exhibits focusing on modern Chinese design, art, photography and fashion.  The exhibits span from the Ace Hotel to Old Town, a path that John has dubbed “The New Creative Corridor”.   The opening weekend (Oct. 9-10) coincides with the opening of JELLYGEN, next door at the Goldsmith Gallery.  http://jellygen.com/

I was given an underground Chinese comics anthology called “Special Comics”, filled with a variety of experimental Chinese comics artists I had never seen before.  From this collection we have curated a selection of 9 artists that deserve wider recognition.  In addition to digital prints of the artists’ work we will also print affordable zines and minicomics of their work, making their comics available to American audiences for the first time.

BIO INFORMATION:

SC (Special Comic) is an indie underground comics anthology created and edited by the young “indie-culture” of China.  Although indie comics have developed energetically around the world, in China, the indie culture has just started.

SC Vol.1 was made in 2004, 176 pages, with a limited print run of 500 copies.  It was the pioneer for the Chinese indie comics market, including the work of 22 artists in China.  The first volume was met with good feedback and established a reputation with the art community.  It created a very good foundation for the second SC comic book.  That’s why there are 49 young contemporary Chinese artists and designers who have joined us for the second time.
